April 18 – Achievement, Approval, and the False Self
The True Self is content to be, while the False Self is driven to prove. Richard Rohr
Gregg’s Reflection
For years, my identity was closely tied to what I accomplished—sales numbers, leadership successes, degrees earned. Each achievement felt good, but the feeling never lasted; the next target was already in sight. In that pattern, I wasn’t just working hard—I was subtly working to earn my worth. That’s the way of the False Self, constantly seeking the next win or compliment to keep from feeling empty.
Approval can be even more intoxicating than achievement. A word of praise or recognition could lift my spirits—but it also kept me hooked on the need for others to validate me. I remember seasons in business when my mood rose and fell based on what others thought of my performance. My True Self, the one hidden in Christ, was buried under the noise of applause and the fear of losing it.
The invitation of the gospel is to live from a place where worth is not earned but received. When we know, deep down, that we are God’s beloved before we do a thing, achievements can be celebrated without defining us. Approval can be welcomed without becoming our oxygen. That’s the freedom Jesus came to give, and it’s the homecoming our souls have been longing for.
