April 26 – When Shame Whispers “Not Enough”
God never leads the soul by guilt or shame. Richard Rohr
Gregg’s Reflection
Shame’s voice is often subtle but persistent: You’re not enough. It’s the whisper that turns mistakes into identity, that transforms “I failed” into “I am a failure.” For years, that whisper shaped my life without my even realizing it. My drive for success, my relentless productivity, was often an attempt to silence shame by proving it wrong.
But the trouble is, shame’s hunger is never satisfied. Even after my biggest achievements, the voice would return. What began to break its power was not a greater accomplishment but a truer vision of God. As my image of God shifted from stern judge to compassionate Father, I began to see myself through God’s eyes—chosen, beloved, and made in His image. Shame cannot survive long in that kind of light.
This doesn’t mean I never feel shame anymore. But I no longer accept its verdict. When the whisper comes, I bring it into God’s presence and let His truth speak louder. There, in His love, I find the courage to live from my true identity instead of shame’s lie.
Scripture
Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.
Psalm 34:5
Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his elect.
Wisdom of Solomon 3:9
Ancient Quotes
He desired me so I came close… ‘I made you, dear, and all I make is perfect. Please come close, for I desire you.’
St. Teresa of Ávila
Modern Quotes
God never leads the soul by guilt or shame… God leads the soul through seduction, invitation, self-exposure, unearned grace, deep forgiveness, and growing acceptance of me in my brokenness.
Richard Rohr, On the Threshold of Transformation, p. 214
Shame dies when stories are told in safe places.
