Gregg’s Reflection

For much of my early Christian life, I pictured God as a stern judge—disappointed, watching for mistakes, quick to correct. Shame reinforced that image, keeping me at a cautious distance from Him. If I was honest, I feared His disapproval more than I trusted His love.

Over time, through scripture, prayer, and the wisdom of spiritual companions, I began to see a different God. Richard Rohr’s words hit me like fresh air: God never leads the soul by guilt or shame. That truth began to dismantle the false image I had carried for decades. I realized that the voice of shame was not God’s voice at all—it was the voice of the enemy, trying to convince me I was unworthy of love.

When I feel that old voice rising now, I remember who God has shown Himself to be—gentle, compassionate, and utterly committed to my good. He doesn’t shame me into change; He loves me into transformation. And that love, unlike shame, has the power to truly set me free.

Scripture

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:1
