April 29 – Living Unashamed Before God
It’s such a powerful experience to be in the presence of someone who sees our brokenness and who sees through the brokenness. James Finley
Gregg’s Reflection
There was a time when I approached God like a stern judge, measuring my worth by how well I’d performed. That mindset kept me guarded—careful not to let God (or anyone else) see the parts I didn’t like. But the deeper I’ve gone in the journey, the more I’ve discovered a God who already sees it all and loves me still.
Living unashamed before God doesn’t mean ignoring our faults; it means refusing to let them define us. It’s standing in God’s presence without the heavy cloak of pretense, knowing we are wanted and welcomed. This kind of honesty is not humiliation—it’s liberation.
James Finley writes about “the invincible preciousness” God sees in us, even in our brokenness. When I believe that’s true, shame loses its grip. I can look God in the face without fear, knowing I am not defined by my mistakes but by His love.
Scripture
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
1 Peter 2:9
Ancient Quotes
Be kind to yourself as you would to a neighbor; for God loves you no less.
Gregory of Nazianzus
Modern Quotes
It’s such a powerful experience to be in the presence of someone who sees our brokenness and who sees through the brokenness to the invincible preciousness of our self in the midst of our brokenness.
James Finley, Mystical Sobriety
Journaling Prompts
- Where are you still hiding from God’s gaze?
- How does your image of God affect your willingness to live unashamed?
- What would change if you believed you were “invincibly precious” to God?
Much of our drivenness arises from deeply held shame and guilt. Guilt says I did a bad thing. Shame says I’m a bad person. Imagine living free from shame and free from regrets.
