April 6 – Grace Seeks the Lowest Place
Like water, grace seeks the lowest place and there it pools. Richard Rohr
Gregg’s Reflection
Richard Rohr often says, “Like water, grace seeks the lowest place.” I have found this to be true in my own life. The moments when I have been brought low—through failure, loss, or humiliation—are often the moments when grace has surprised me the most. It does not come when I am standing tall in self-assurance, but when I am bowed down, empty, and open.
One of the greatest paradoxes of the spiritual life is that our instinct is to avoid the low places, yet those are the very places where God is waiting for us. I think back to seasons when I fought hard to “rise above” my difficulties, only to discover that healing and peace came when I stopped fighting and let myself sink into God’s embrace. It’s almost as if grace has a gravitational pull—it flows downhill, gathering in the valleys of our lives.
In a culture obsessed with winning and appearing strong, this truth is a gentle but subversive reminder: the lowest place is not a place of shame, but a sacred meeting ground with the God who dwells with the humble and contrite in heart.
Scripture
For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.
Psalm 149:4
Ancient Quotes
Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility.
St. Augustine, Sermon 69
God’s grace is most present where our need is greatest.
Julian of Norwich, Revelations of Divine Love, ch. 32.
Modern Quotes
We must not be afraid of falling, failing or going down, because it is there we find grace. Like water, grace seeks the lowest place and there it pools.
Richard Rohr, The Universal Christ
