Gregg’s Reflection

When I think about the power of witness, I often recall words attributed to St. Francis of Assisi: “Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words.” Whether or not he actually said it, the truth remains — our lives speak louder than our sermons.

By the time I encountered Richard Rohr’s words about teaching and witness, they rang deeply true. He noted that people are affected not so much by our theologizing or arguments, but by the peace and joy they see in our eyes, our gestures, and our presence. That resonates with me — what we radiate is what people receive.

I have learned that joy is not superficial cheerfulness, but an inner current of God’s presence. It comes from living in the awareness that we are loved, that life itself is gift, and that Christ is with us always. To carry joy in our hearts is to witness to God in ways deeper than any speech. Joy is the echo of divine life within us, and when others sense it, they too are drawn toward God.

Scripture

The joy of the Lord is your strength.

Nehemiah 8:10

You will show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 16:11

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.

Philippians 4:4

The righteous are glad and rejoice before God; they are happy and joyful.

Psalm 68:3

Ancient Quotes

Before you speak of peace, you must first have it in your heart.

Francis of Assisi

People are drawn to God by joy as flowers are drawn to the sun.

Catherine of Siena, Dialogue, ch. 26

Modern Quotes

In many countries where I have taught, people watched my eyes, my smile (or lack of it), my gestures, my neediness, my peace (or lack of it), and that became the primary message that affected them or disaffected them—much more than my theologizing and my sermons. If my expressions and energy were off, my teaching was largely a waste of time.

Richard Rohr, Eager to Love, p. 199-200
