August 31 – Fire in the Heart

Prayer of the heart is not just a discipline; it is an encounter with God’s transforming presence within. Sometimes this presence feels like fire—burning away distractions, purifying motives, and filling me with a love that cannot be contained. Other times it is like water—quiet, steady, and nourishing, flowing into the dry places of my soul.

Over the years, I’ve come to see that both images are true. Fire names the passion of God’s love; water names its persistence and life-giving grace. Together they describe what happens when my scattered mind sinks into the heart and finds God already waiting there.

To pray from the heart is to let divine fire burn and divine water flow—two movements of the same grace. My task is not to manufacture this flame or stream, but to open myself in trust. The Spirit prays within me, and the heart becomes a temple of living presence.
