Gregg’s Reflection

One of the first things visitors notice when they come to our mountain home is the silence. At first, it feels unsettling—there is no hum of traffic, no constant background noise—just wind in the pines, birdsong, and the occasional rustle of branches. When the wind stills, the quiet deepens, and at night under a star-filled sky, it can feel like the world has stopped.

Many people flee from silence, but for me it has become a place of encounter. Contemplative life is not for the timid; it takes courage to sit still and face the noise of your own mind. But in that stillness, I have learned to meet God more deeply. Silence is not empty—it is full of presence.

Deepening our relationship with God is a process—discovering, pondering, seeking, encountering, loving, imitating, and, in rare and grace-filled moments, experiencing union. Each step invites us to move beyond words, into a deeper intimacy with the One who loves us beyond measure.

Scripture

But whenever you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Matthew 6:6

Ancient Quotes

Be gentle to the weak, firm to the stubborn, steadfast to the proud, humble to the lowly. Be gentle in generosity, untiring in love, just in all things.

Columbanus, Letter to a Disciple

Modern Quotes

When we turn inward, investigating the present moment with patience and inquisitiveness, we become a beach across which the wave of love may break and transform the topography of our soul.

Mirabai Starr, Wild Mercy, p. 26
