February 14: The Dark will be your Womb Tonight
Darkness is the place where egoism dies and true unselfish love for the ‘other’ is set free. Constance Fitzgerald
Gregg’s Reflection
There are times in the spiritual life when the darkness feels overwhelming — when God’s face seems hidden, and sorrow fills the heart. The psalmist’s words echo our own cries: How long, O Lord? Yet even in the tension between lament and trust, there is a choice to cling to God’s steadfast love.
Northern lights go on in the darkness.

I’ve come to see darkness not as an enemy to be avoided, but as a space where God’s deepest work often takes place. Like the hidden growth of a seed beneath the soil, transformation happens beyond the reach of our understanding. This is not easy. It asks for trust when there are no answers, and for patience when we can’t yet see what is taking shape.
Poets and mystics speak of darkness as the womb of new life. It is the place where ego dies and love is born. In the silence and the unknowing, God is birthing something in us — something that cannot be rushed, but will, in its time, emerge into the light.
Scripture
How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I bear pain in my soul, and have sorrow in my heart all day long? But I trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.
Psalm 13:1–2, 5–6
Ancient Quotes
The darknesses and trials, spiritual and temporal, that fortunate souls ordinarily undergo on their way to the high state of perfection are so numerous and profound that human science cannot understand them adequately… Only those who suffer them will know what this experience is like.
St. John of the Cross, The Ascent of Mount Carmel, Prologue, 1
Modern Quotes
Darkness is the place where egoism dies and true unselfish love for the ‘other’ is set free. Moreover, it is the birthplace of a vision and a hope that cannot be imagined this side of darkness.
