February 23: Trust God Enough to Take a Step?
You can’t see the whole path ahead, but there is usually enough light to take the next step. And then to trust God’s guidance in the moment. Henri Nouwen
Gregg’s Reflection
One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned in discernment is that God rarely shows the whole path. Most of the time, there’s just enough light for the next step. Early in my journey, I wanted a full map — clarity, certainty, and confirmation before I moved. But I’ve come to see that faith isn’t about knowing every turn in advance. It’s about trusting God enough to move forward, even when the way ahead is dim.
Sometimes that next step feels small and manageable. Other times it feels like stepping into a river you can’t see across. Yet again and again, I’ve found that if I take the step in front of me — the one illuminated right now — God’s guidance meets me in the moment. And the strange thing is, once you take the step, the path behind you starts to make sense in ways it didn’t before.
Scripture
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope.
Psalm 130:5
My soul yearns for you in the night; my spirit within me earnestly seeks you.
Isaiah 26:9
Ancient Quotes
Faith is the eye that sees the unseen, the hand that touches the untouchable, and the heart that rests in what it cannot yet comprehend.
Basil the Great, Homilies on the Psalms, Homily on Ps. 115
Modern Quotes
You can’t see the whole path ahead, but there is usually enough light to take the next step. And then to trust God’s guidance in the moment.
Henri Nouwen, Discernment, p. 179
Faith enlightens the path behind you, but as a rule, in front of you it is still dark. Now, however, not so threatening or impossible, because for you ‘a light shines on in the darkness.’ (John 1:5)
Richard Rohr, The Naked Now, p. 121
