February 24: Separating Signal from Noise
God speaks to us all the time and in many ways, but it requires spiritual discernment to hear God’s voice, see what God sees, and read the signs in daily life. Henri Nouwen
Gregg’s Reflection
In 1995, I revisited my values and realized they could all be distilled into a single yearning — to become a wise leader. For years, I chased that goal, believing wisdom would validate me. It wasn’t until about 2015 that I began to understand my mistake: wisdom is not a possession or an achievement, it is a gift from God. We can be conduits of it, but it is never ours to own.
Following the Spirit requires tuning your ear to God’s voice, which means learning to separate the “signal” from the endless “noise” in and around us. My friend, Pastor Mike Foss, described it well — the noise comes from every direction, even from within. Discernment filters that noise so we can hear the true signal of God’s leading.

Sometimes that clarity comes after we’ve made a poor choice, when the challenges we face redirect us toward a better way. Other times, it comes in subtle nudges we only recognize in hindsight. Either way, God’s guidance is present, and the faint path becomes clearer when we trust Him enough to follow.
Scripture
If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.
Galatians 5:25
Spiritual progress is the result of deliberate and discerning choices.
RENOVARÉ Bible Notes on Hebrews, NT p. 404
Ancient Quotes
The unexamined life is not worth living.
Socrates, as recorded in Plato’s Apology 38a
Modern Quotes
The challenges we encounter are often road maps, pointing us in a different direction than one we might have planned. If we can open ourselves to trusting the divine and allowing our lives to unfold, it’s amazing what can happen.
Polly Baca
God speaks to us all the time and in many ways, but it requires spiritual discernment to hear God’s voice, see what God sees, and read the signs in daily life. No one can discern the signs of life alone. We turn to our religious traditions and also to the wisdom others have gained and recorded from their journeys. As we learn to read spiritually about spiritual things, we open our hearts to God’s voice.
