Gregg’s Reflection

Jesus never called anyone to follow Him in isolation. From the beginning, He gathered disciples into community. This was not only for fellowship but for formation. Watching one another live the way of Jesus was, and still is, an essential part of discipleship.

The Christian life is “caught” as much as it is taught. We all need mentors who model what it looks like to follow Jesus in the ordinary and the difficult. Just as importantly, we are called to be those examples for others — not perfect, but faithfully walking the path.

Apprenticeship means taking on the practices and priorities of our Teacher. Over time, we begin to think, act, and love more like Him. It is a lifelong process of learning, imitating, and becoming.

Scripture

Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.

1 Corinthians 11:1

Ancient Quotes

In all things that you find in the Holy Scriptures, seek out the purpose of the words, that you may enter into the depth of the thoughts of the saints and understand them with greater exactness.

St. Isaac the Syrian, Sermon 1.85

Modern Quotes

Apprenticeship to Jesus in the fellowship of his people is the only assured path of life under God. On that path we move from faith to more faith, from grace to more grace, and are able to walk increasingly in holiness and power.

RENOVARE Bible Notes, NT p. 481
