February 6: Do You only have a Moment?
Do you have only one minute? Hem it with quietness. Do not spend it thinking how little time you have. I can give you much in one minute. Amy Carmichael
Gregg’s Reflection
Throughout Scripture, the call to meditation is clear and consistent. Yet silence is a challenge for most of us. We fill our days with noise—scrolling, streaming, talking—anything to avoid stillness. My spiritual director, Mark Ritchie, once said, “In running from loneliness, I create all types of activity to distract me.”
Sitting in silence for twenty minutes can feel impossible. Even ten minutes may seem daunting. But I’ve learned that even a single minute, offered to God, can open our hearts to His presence. A glance toward Him in love, repeated often, transforms the day.
I think of the wind spinner Genie gave me—a gift for both my birthday and our anniversary. Its movement against the sky always draws my attention. It makes the wind visible, and reminds me of the movement of the Spirit, the wind. Every time I look at it, I’m reminded of God and pause, if only for a moment, to be with Him.

Scripture
Their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.
Psalm 1:2
I think of you on my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night.
Psalm 63:6
Ancient Quotes
The brothers and sisters must guard the times of private prayer with relentless watchfulness. They must remember that communal worship is not a substitute for the quiet communion of the individual soul with God.
St. Francis of Assisi, Rule of 1221, ch. 5.2.
