July 19 – Anchored in Hope

A few years ago, I watched a summer storm sweep across the valley, the wind whipping through the trees and rain blurring the mountains. Our cabin stayed anchored to its foundation, while trees a hundred years old were uprooted. That image often returns to me when I think about the storms of life.

Hope is the anchor of the soul, holding us steady when uncertainty and fear threaten to overwhelm. It does not deny the reality of the storm, but it roots us in something — Someone — unshakable. Hope keeps us from drifting when circumstances push and pull.

The writer of Hebrews reminds us that this hope is “a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul,” rooted not in our ability to hold on, but in God’s unwavering grip on us. It’s a hope that looks beyond the present moment, toward the fulfillment of God’s promises, and in doing so gives us courage to live faithfully today.
