Gregg’s Reflection

The Greek word kenosis means “to empty.” Paul uses it to describe Jesus’ willing self-emptying in order to fully enter into our humanity. This wasn’t an emptying of divinity, but of privilege, power, and position.

In my own journey, I’ve seen how clinging to my identity, accomplishments, or influence can become barriers to deeper intimacy with God. Kenosis invites me to loosen my grip, to release the need to be seen a certain way, and to live with open hands.

This emptying is not about erasing who we are—it’s about making space for God’s life to fill us. The paradox is that in letting go, we don’t lose ourselves; we find our truest selves in Christ.

Kenosis is not a one-time heroic act. It’s a daily choice, often in small and hidden ways—choosing to listen before speaking, to serve without recognition, to forgive without conditions. It’s the long work of shaping a heart that reflects the self-giving love of Jesus.
