June 23 – Detachment and Freedom
The more we can let go of the false attachments that give us our identity, the more we can live in the freedom and joy of our true self in God. Richard Rohr
Gregg’s Reflection
Detachment is one of the most misunderstood words in the spiritual life. It doesn’t mean indifference, coldness, or withdrawing from love—it means loving rightly. When I’m detached, I can fully appreciate people, experiences, and possessions without clinging to them for my identity or security.
I’ve learned that unhealthy attachment breeds fear: fear of losing what I love, fear of change, fear of scarcity. Detachment loosens fear’s grip because my heart is anchored in God, not in circumstances. It allows me to enjoy blessings without trying to control them, and to endure losses without being destroyed by them.
This kind of freedom doesn’t come quickly. It is forged in prayer, reflection, and repeated letting go. Over time, God teaches us that the only secure place to rest our hearts is in Him. And when we live from that place, we are finally free to love without fear.
Scripture
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
Colossians 3:2
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end.
Lamentations 3:22
