Gregg’s Reflection

When I first heard the phrase “non-anxious presence,” I assumed it was about hiding emotions and appearing calm. I’ve since learned it’s about something far deeper — being so rooted in God’s presence that my peace doesn’t rise and fall with the circumstances around me.

In leadership, family life, and ministry, I’ve seen how my own anxiety can ripple out and unsettle others. I’ve also seen the opposite — when I am centered and grounded, those around me begin to breathe easier, even in tense moments. This is the kind of peace Jesus spoke of, the peace the world cannot take away.

Being a non-anxious presence does not mean ignoring problems or avoiding conflict. It means stepping into them without being ruled by fear or reactivity. It means trusting that God is at work, even when I cannot see the outcome, and allowing that trust to steady my words, actions, and even my body language.

Scripture

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

John 14:27, this passage was the original focus when I began meditation in 1982. Peace was what I sought. Over time, it emerged.

Ancient Quotes
