March 31 — Softening to Receive Truth

Truth is not imposed on us from without, but rises up from within us, like a seed breaking through the soil. Gregory the Great

Gregg’s Reflection

The truth doesn’t usually crash into our lives like a storm; more often, it arrives like a gentle rain, soaking slowly into the hardened places of our hearts. I’ve learned that my readiness to receive truth depends less on how loudly it’s proclaimed and more on how willing I am to soften and listen.

In my younger years, I thought transformation came through sheer effort—more study, more discipline, more doing. But over time, I’ve realized that some truths only take root when I stop striving and allow myself to be receptive. This kind of softening often feels like letting go—of defensiveness, of the need to be right, of the desire to control.

When I give God space to work, the truth seems to seep in quietly, shaping my heart from within. It’s a slower process than I once imagined, but it’s deeper and more lasting.

Scripture

I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

Ezekiel 36:26

Ancient Quotes

Truth is not imposed on us from without, but rises up from within us, like a seed breaking through the soil.

Gregory the Great, Homilies on the Gospels

Modern Quotes

Seeing. We might say that the whole of life lies in that verb. Fuller being is closer union. Union increases only through an increase in consciousness, that is to say in vision. And that is why the history of the living world can be summarized as the elaboration of ever more perfect eyes within a cosmos in which there is always something more to be seen.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, The Phenomenon of Man, p. 31

Journaling Prompts

  • Where in your life might God be inviting you to soften so truth can take root?

  • What attitudes or defenses could you release to become more receptive?

  • How have you experienced truth arriving gently rather than forcefully?
