May 11 – From Gratitude to Generosity
When you are grateful, you overflow, and when you overflow, you are naturally generous. Gratitude begets generosity. Diana Butler Bass
Gregg’s Reflection
In my earlier years, I sometimes thought of generosity as a duty—a noble one, perhaps, but still something to check off the list. But over time, I’ve noticed something shift. As gratitude has deepened in my heart, generosity no longer feels like “giving something away.” It feels like participating in the same abundance God has poured into me.
I think of the times Genie and I have had the privilege to help someone—whether financially, with our time, or simply through presence and encouragement. In those moments, I’m aware that what we’re offering is only possible because of what’s been given to us. None of us starts from zero; we all carry the blessings, opportunities, and investments of others.
Generosity, when rooted in gratitude, is not about guilt, impressing others, or even meeting a need. It’s about the joy of sharing. Just as a river flows from its source, generosity flows naturally from a heart that knows it has received more than it could ever earn or repay. And in the process, the giver is blessed just as surely as the one who receives.
Scripture
You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
2 Corinthians 9:11
A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
Proverbs 11:25
Ancient Quotes
Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Didache, c. 1st–2nd century
No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.
Charles Dickens, Our Mutual Friend
Modern Quotes
When you are grateful, you overflow, and when you overflow, you are naturally generous. Gratitude begets generosity.
Diana Butler Bass, Grateful
Generosity is not an obligation; it is an act of freedom. When we give, we proclaim that the world is abundant, that love is without limit, and that we trust God’s provision.
Richard Rohr, Simplicity
