May 13 – The Mutual Dance of Giving and Receiving
The act of receiving is as holy as the act of giving; both require an open heart. Henri Nouwen
Gregg’s Reflection
There was a season when I was much more comfortable giving than receiving. Giving let me stay in control, keep my image intact, and avoid revealing my own needs. Receiving? That felt like weakness.
Sometimes I was offered a gift that I didn’t quite know what to do with it—and I had a hard time receiving. Everything in me wanted to deflect, minimize, or pay it back immediately so I could escape the vulnerability of graciously receiving. Over time I’ve learned that receiving is its own spiritual practice: it humbles the ego, honors the giver, and keeps me honest about my dependence on God and others.
I’ve come to see that giving and receiving are not separate transactions—they are one holy exchange. When we give, we acknowledge that what we have was never ours alone. When we receive, we acknowledge that we are held. Gratitude deepens in both directions. The dance isn’t complete without both steps.
Scripture
Freely you have received; freely give.
Matthew 10:8
It is more blessed to give than to receive.
Acts 20:35
Ancient Quotes
Liberality is the virtue concerned with wealth; it disposes us to give and to receive rightly—at the right times, in the right ways.
Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics, IV.1
A benefit consists not in what is done or given, but in the intention of the giver.
Seneca, De Beneficiis I.6
Modern Quotes
Until we can receive with an open heart, we are never really giving with an open heart.
Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection
The act of receiving is as holy as the act of giving; both require an open heart.
Henri Nouwen, Life of the Beloved
Journaling Prompts
- Which is harder for you—giving or receiving? Why?
- Recall a time a gift felt “too extravagant.” What made it hard to receive?
- How might viewing giving and receiving as one sacred rhythm change your practice of generosity this week?
When we turn towards gratitude, everything shifts. Every day becomes something to spark gratitude. And gratitude sparks generosity. We quit striving and start appreciating. We notice more things that spark awe and wonder. We stop and smell the roses. Awaken to Gratitude in your life.
