May 18 – Hope as an Anchor
Hope is called the anchor of the soul because it gives stability to the Christian life… it latches on to the certainty of the promises of the future that God has made. R.C. Sproul
Gregg’s Reflection
I’ve had times when life felt like a storm at sea—confusing, disorienting, and exhausting. In those moments, I’ve learned that hope isn’t a vague wish for things to get better. It’s the steady conviction that God’s promises are true, even when I can’t see how they’ll unfold.
The anchor image from Hebrews has always spoken deeply to me. An anchor doesn’t remove the waves; it keeps the vessel from drifting too far from safety. In my own life, prayer, scripture, and the memory of God’s past faithfulness have been that anchor—keeping me grounded when circumstances tried to pull me away.
Hope as an anchor reminds me that I am not at the mercy of every wind and current. My security isn’t in calmer seas but in the One who holds me fast. That hope allows me to face uncertainty with a steadiness that is not my own.
Scripture
We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters the inner shrine behind the curtain.
Hebrews 6:19
Ancient Quotes
Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul—and sings the tunes without the words—and never stops—at all.
Emily Dickinson
Modern Quotes
Hope is called the anchor of the soul because it gives stability to the Christian life… it latches on to the certainty of the promises of the future that God has made.
R.C. Sproul
O Lord, sea of love and goodness, let me not fear too much the storms and winds of my daily life, and let me know there is ebb and flow but the sea remains the sea.
