May 2 – The Heavy Yoke of Religious Duty
The burden of self-justification is the heaviest yoke any soul can carry. Brennan Manning
Gregg’s Reflection
I spent years believing that the more I did for God, the more He would approve of me. Somewhere along the way, I confused discipleship with a performance review. My faith became a running list of “shoulds” and “oughts,” all of which carried the weight of proving my worth—not to my community, not even to myself, but to God.
Jesus spoke plainly about those who tie up heavy burdens and place them on the shoulders of others without lifting a finger to help. I had done that to myself—unknowingly loading my spiritual pack with rules, disciplines, and impossible expectations. While spiritual practices can be life-giving, they become life-draining when they flow from fear instead of love, from obligation instead of freedom.
What I’ve learned is that the heart of the Gospel is not “try harder,” but “trust deeper.” Jesus offers a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light—not because there’s nothing to do, but because love makes the load lighter than fear ever could.
Scripture
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
Matthew 11:28–30

Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise; seek what they sought.
