Gregg’s Reflection

When I first began to untangle my life from a worldview of obligation, it was tempting to think freedom was the reward for finally getting things right. If I prayed enough, served enough, or showed up enough, then God might grant me some inner release. But that thinking was just another form of obligation disguised in spiritual clothes.

The freedom Christ offers doesn’t wait for our perfect performance—it meets us where we are. It’s the gift that comes before the transformation, the grace that arrives before we even take the first step. Paul’s words to the Galatians are clear: It is for freedom that Christ has set us free—not someday, but now.

Once we truly believe freedom is a gift, our hearts stop striving to earn it. We can stop keeping score, stop watching the clock, and begin to live from a deeper center. And in that space, love and joy begin to flow in ways obligation could never produce.

Scripture

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Galatians 5:1

Ancient Quotes

God gave us free will so that we might love Him freely; for love that is compelled is not love at all.

St. John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John, Homily 34

He who is free in Christ is a slave to none, for he belongs to God alone.

St. Augustine, Tractates on the Gospel of John, 41.10

Modern Quotes

Grace is not opposed to effort, it is opposed to earning.

Dallas Willard, The Great Omission, p. 61

Freedom is not so much a license to do what we want as the power to become who we were meant to be.

N.T. Wright, After You Believe, p. 62

Journaling Prompts

  • In what ways have you tried to “earn” God’s freedom in the past?

  • How might your life look different if you received freedom as a present reality rather than a future reward?

  • What “yoke of slavery” is God inviting you to lay down today?
