Gregg’s Reflection

When I began to see the ways obligation had shaped my life, I realized my “yes” often came too quickly. I said yes to opportunities, projects, and requests before I had paused to ask if they aligned with what God was calling me to do. Somewhere deep inside, I thought saying “no” would make me appear ungrateful, selfish, or even unspiritual.

The turning point came when I understood that every “yes” is also a “no” to something else. If I said yes to every request out of obligation, I was often saying no to the rest my soul needed, the relationships that mattered most, and the quiet time where I could actually hear God’s voice. I remember Fritz asking me if the Bishop I was frustrated with was free to say no. That question opened my eyes—not just to his freedom, but to my own.

Freedom in Christ means being able to say yes with joy and no without guilt. Jesus Himself walked away from crowds to pray, declined demands for signs, and said “my time has not yet come” more than once. If the Son of God lived with that kind of freedom, surely His followers are invited to do the same.

Scripture

Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

Matthew 5:37
