October 10 – Solitude, Furnace of Transformation
In solitude the soul converses with God and learns the truth of itself. John Climacus
Gregg’s Reflection
When I first entered extended solitude in Colorado, I imagined it would be peaceful and simple. Instead, I often found myself restless, even irritated, as if silence was pressing me against the raw edges of my own soul. Over time, I realized that solitude is not an escape but an encounter — a meeting place where my false self is uncovered and God invites me to live from my true identity in Christ.
Solitude works on us like fire refines metal. What is superficial and fragile begins to burn away, and what is real and lasting emerges. The compulsions to prove myself, to seek affirmation, or to control outcomes lose their hold when I sit long enough in God’s presence. Solitude unmasks these illusions not to shame us, but to free us.
Slowly, through the silence, the Spirit reshapes us. We begin to discover a deeper self that does not live by comparison or competition, but by grace. In the furnace of solitude, God gives us new eyes to see, new ears to hear, and a new heart to love. This transformation is not instant, but over time it gives us a freedom and peace that no achievement can offer.
