October 13 – Interior Solitude
In every man lies a zone of solitude that no human intimacy can fill: And there God encounters us. Brother Roger of Taizé
Gregg’s Reflection
As I sit here in silence and solitude on my 75th birthday, gratitude for all the blessings of my life emerges from the deep. I think of the relationships that have shaped me, the journeys I’ve walked, and the ways God has sustained me through both joy and trial. This gratitude wells up not from external circumstances but from a quiet center within — a place of interior solitude that has been cultivated over years of practice and grace.
True solitude does not require a mountain retreat or a desert wilderness. It is the still point of the soul, the place where God dwells within us. Even in a crowd, even in the midst of activity, we can carry this inner silence with us. It grounds us, reminding us that our identity is rooted not in the shifting voices around us, but in the eternal presence of God.
Interior solitude is a gift that frees us from the compulsion to constantly react, defend, or prove ourselves. It gives us space to breathe, to listen, and to live more gently. From this center, we can love others more fully, not out of fear or striving, but out of the abundance that flows from communion with God.
Scripture
