Gregg’s Reflection

On some rivers I’ve fished, the hatch comes off the water all at once—mayflies rising in clouds, trout feeding eagerly. For a brief window, the river becomes a banquet table, alive with abundance. Psalm 36 paints a similar image: “You give them drink from the river of your delights.” God is not stingy; God’s love flows like a river teeming with life, more than enough for all.

I’ve had moments in prayer that felt like sipping from that river of delight. Not every time, not every day, but sometimes God surprises me with an inner sweetness that cannot be manufactured. Joy rises unbidden, like water from a hidden spring, and it carries me into gratitude. Delight is not earned—it is gifted.

What strikes me is that God’s river flows whether I notice or not. The invitation is to step in, to open my heart, and to receive. Even amid challenges, joy bubbles up where love flows free. And when I drink deeply, I am nourished not just for myself but so that joy might ripple outward into the world.

Scripture

They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from the river of your delights.

Psalm 36:8

Ancient Quotes

The river of God is full of water, watering the barren places of the soul. From this river flows joy, from this river flows life, from this river flows all delight.

Ephrem the Syrian, Hymns on Paradise, Hymn VI

Modern Quotes

Joy is the most infallible sign of the presence of God. It springs up like a hidden fountain, reminding us that grace is always flowing.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, The Joy of Living
