Gregg’s Reflection

When I first heard Robert Johnson speak of the “golden shadow,” it reframed how I thought about my inner life. Shadow was not just about the shameful or unwanted parts of myself — it was also the place where hidden gifts had been buried. I realized that some of the things I most admired in others were qualities I had disowned in myself.

Courage, imagination, joy, even leadership — all of these can be projected outward when we’re not ready to claim them as our own. As long as they remain hidden in shadow, we live smaller than the life God has given us. But when I allow God to shine light there, those buried gifts begin to emerge, often with surprising power.

The invitation is not to inflate the ego but to integrate what has been lost. As Johnson writes, “The shadow contains not only the dark part of the personality but also the gold.” When we welcome home the golden shadow, we begin to glimpse the wholeness God already sees in us.

Scripture

Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.

1 Peter 4:10

Ancient Quotes

Do not despise yourself; for the treasure of God is within you. You are a vessel of the divine.

Ephrem the Syrian, Hymns on Faith

Modern Quotes

The shadow contains not only the dark part of the personality but also the gold. Repression of this valuable part of our nature is one of the tragedies of the human condition.

Robert A. Johnson, Owning Your Own Shadow

To change people’s consciousness, we have to find a way to reach their unconscious. That’s where our hearts and our real agendas lie … The unconscious is where it all lies stored, and this determines a great deal of what we pay attention to and what we ignore.

Richard Rohr, CAC Morning Meditation, 4/28/21

Journaling Prompts

  • What quality you admire in others might actually live, hidden, in your own “golden shadow”?

  • How have fear or shame kept you from owning your gifts?

  • Where do you sense God inviting you to welcome back a buried part of yourself?

  • How could claiming your golden shadow help you serve others more fully?
