March 1 – The Learning Circle

The Circle is a process, a way of living. One does not become a disciple of Jesus and stand still; discipleship is a lifestyle of learning. Mike Breen

Gregg’s Reflection

The Learning Circle begins with two simple but searching questions: What is God saying to me? What am I going to do about it? When we notice a Kairos moment — a word, an event, or an encounter that carries the weight of God’s voice — we are invited to pause and pay attention.

The first half of the circle is about observation and reflection. We slow down enough to notice what’s happening inside us and bring it into conversation with trusted companions. Often, the Spirit speaks through those who know and love us, confirming or expanding what we have sensed.

The second half of the circle moves us into action. We make a plan, share it with others, and take the step God is asking of us. Over time, each trip around the circle makes a small course correction toward God’s faint path — and small course corrections can change the whole direction of our lives.

Scripture

If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

John 8:31–32

Ancient Quotes

Let each of us examine his own heart, for there the Lord speaks. Whoever listens in humility will hear the word that leads to life.

John Cassian, Conferences, II.10

Modern Quotes

Whenever we fall again and lose our peace through guilt or shame, we find the same cycle begins anew… with humility we discover afresh His loving mercy and forgiveness.

Celtic Daily Prayer, Book Two, p. 1164

Where kairos is an event word — something that has a beginning and ending — repentance (metanoia) is a process word, as is believe (pistis). The Circle is a process, a way of living that does not have a specific beginning and ending. One does not become a disciple of Jesus and stand still; discipleship is a lifestyle of learning.

Mike Breen, Building a Discipling Culture

Journaling Prompts:

    • When was the last time you noticed a Kairos moment?

    • What did you observe and reflect on in that moment?

    • Who could you share it with for accountability?

    • What small step could you take in response today?
