Some of my most profound moments of sensing God’s presence have happened far from church pews. I remember one quiet morning at our cabin, sipping coffee on the porch, watching fog creep up the canyon. There was nothing dramatic—just stillness, light, and the slow waking of the day—but I felt wrapped in a peace that had no earthly explanation.
It reminded me that God doesn’t always arrive with a trumpet blast; more often, it’s like the soft footfall of a friend you’ve known all your life. The air feels charged, your heart softens, and you know you’re not alone.
Brother Lawrence, in Practicing the Presence of God, spoke of finding God as he washed dishes. These moments teach me to pay attention—to believe that the Holy can meet me just as easily over a sink of dishes or in the woods as in the sanctuary.
