Gregg’s Reflection

In my early career, I often measured my worth by how much I contributed, how visible I was, or how essential I thought my role might be. It felt good to be needed, and in subtle ways, I began to equate that feeling with significance. But when circumstances changed—a shift in leadership, the sale of our family business—I realized how much of my hope was tied to my own sense of self-importance.

That was a hard awakening. It’s humbling to learn that the world can get along just fine without you. But that humility also carried a kind of freedom. When my hope shifted from what I could accomplish to the reality that God’s purposes endure whether or not I am in the spotlight, I found a steadier ground to stand on.

Now, I try to see my role as one piece in a much larger tapestry. My worth doesn’t hinge on being indispensable; it rests in being faithful. There’s deep relief in knowing the story doesn’t depend on me, and deeper hope in knowing it depends on God.
