Gregg’s Reflection

For years, I thought humility meant downplaying my gifts. If someone complimented me, I’d brush it off, thinking that was the “Christian” thing to do. But in time, I realized that false modesty was just another form of self-preoccupation—it kept the focus on me, rather than on God.

Humility, at its heart, is truth-telling. It’s the willingness to acknowledge what’s real—both the beauty and the brokenness—without exaggeration or denial. When I began to name my gifts as gifts from God, not as personal achievements, it freed me to offer them without pride and without fear. And when I could admit my limits without shame, I found the grace to receive help from others.

This kind of truth-telling takes practice, especially in a world that rewards posturing and image. But I’ve found it to be the most reliable soil for hope—because when we live in reality, we are living where God meets us.
