May 24 – Letting Go of the Need to Win
The need to win is the surest way to lose what matters most. Richard Rohr
Gregg’s Reflection
I’ve been competitive for as long as I can remember. Whether it was sales numbers in the business, debates in meetings, or catching more fish than my friends, there was always a little part of me that wanted to prove myself by winning. Over time, I began to notice how that desire, unchecked, could steal my joy and strain my relationships.
Letting go of the need to win hasn’t been easy. I’ve had to learn that my value isn’t determined by being first, smartest, or most successful. Some of my richest moments have come when I’ve allowed someone else’s success to be enough—celebrating their win without needing one of my own. That shift has made space for deeper connection, because I’m no longer relating to others as opponents to outshine, but as companions on the journey.
In the end, winning is often about ego, but love is about presence. When I’m grounded in God’s love, I no longer have to secure my identity through victory. The need to win fades, and what remains is gratitude for simply being part of the game of life.
